Question for Oscar Keepers/Experts. I ask for your input.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I haven't kept an Oscar for a number of years now, and I want to do it right, I have a very specific question:

my question is, what is the best way to avoid HITH? I really truly do NOT want to deal with HITH, any advice on how to avoid it all together?

I really would appreciate any and all input here.

thanks.

The easiest was to prevent HITH is to have nice clean water. Which means routine water changes and also making sure he is in a tank that is big enough for him. If he is in a smaller tank the water will foul quicker. So the bigger the better!

I have never had an oscar get HITH. Water quality is the main thing to preventing it.

As for feeding, you will want to use a high quality pellet. I feed mine Hikari cichlid pellets once a day.

Hith obviously has a number of causes. I have 2 oscars in the same tank same water same feeding schedual. Basically no decor. One has no Hith. One looks like its head is a brain from all the hith and hith scars. I need to use Melafix to keep his in check. The oscar he swims with all day.. Has none.

I've fed Oscars every day, just don't over feed and feed good quality food

Also a higher quality O is less likely to get HITH. Spend the money and get one from an established breeder rather than one from Walmart. I live out in the middle of nowhere and have to buy all my fish online. But I end up getting higher quality fish than if I were to buy one from a chain store.
