I have a GSP about 5 inches long hes very happy but im wondering about his color sometimes...his belly is black every now and then...is this normal? a sign of stress? I want to know if i can do something to get rid of the black (if its a sign of stress)

We'd have to rule out any stressors, to see if this is normal behavious or just something he does to experss his mood.

Have you had him for long?
Has he always been that way?
Is he eating well, swimming normally?
Parameters?
SG?
Tank size?
Decor?
Tankmates?
What's going on when he does it? IE: mine used to get a black belly when eating.

Have you had him for long? About 4 months

Has he always been that way? Yeah hes always changed back and forth

Is he eating well, swimming normally? Yep he seems happy! especially since iv put him in his new full marine bigger tank

Parameters? Nitrates 0 Nitrites .25 (how do i drop this? i just put my micron filter on to increase filtering) PH 8.0 Amonia .25 (on last test, think there was some left over krill that caused it)
SG? 1.20
Tank size? 55 gallon
Decor? 30lbs live rock, small corals
Tankmates? one 1.5 inch sharpnose white spotted puffer
What's going on when he does it? nothing changes it can be at any time..i just watched him totally change from black to white in 1 second lol...just now while im typing this..now theres not 1 spec of black on his belly..

Mine always go from dark to light. They used to stay dark more when I had them in a darker substrate. I have always found the changes to reflect mood. My rule is dont get too worried about i if they are swimming and eating well. You already do water changes and know to watch the water quality. Some puffers take a while to adjust to new surroundings.

For my SW tank 75 gallon with two GSP and other fish I do 30% weekly-biweekly water changes. I have 3 times the filtration and am careful not to overfeed too much. My eel likes it when I do though.

I wouldnt be to worried about it, just keep an eye on him for a while and make sure he looks like he is doing okay.

My guess would be you are stil having curing going on with your LR. Other than that, your puffer is probably just displaying it's many moods. I'd keep doing WC to get those parameters to 0.
