* Does anybody know if there are any benefits to fish when/if they ingest some sand? I was wondering if it helped with digestion perhaps?

Any thoughts?

i dont know if it would help the digestive track...but, when my Jar picks up food off the sand, he picks some of it up as well...the food goes down and the sand comes flying out his gills! so i assume he doesnt even swallow any sand...its actually pretty cool to watch.

although if he did..i would think it would be ok..and he might even benifit from the light scrubing/cleaning action from the sand coming out? this is just my opinion ;)

anybody else?

if they are anything like some other animals, they use sand to help churn the food in their stomachs. I know some animals swallow rocks for this, but in the absence of rocks, I guess sand could do as a substitute. This is just speculation, as all of my fish eject swallowed sand from their gills.

I think you should eat some sand Gr8, and let us know the results. A little scientific experiment never hurt anyone. :D

On the other side, it could lead to impaction or something, I'm not really sure. I know with a lot of fish though when they look in digestive tracts there are particles of sand/silt/rock, and I'd assume it doesn't harm them, as long as it's not to big particle... so I guess sand is ok.

Shall I also ingest 20 tablespoons of salt along with a shot of Prime?

I've pounded plenty of sand, but never ate any on purpose. She eats a KILO a day?? Sounds to me like she's had dementia for the last 40 years. Although I've heard of people with severe OCD that couldn't stop eating dirt...

I don't know the answer to the sand issue for fish but I would think that if it was "dangerous" to any species, those species have long disappeared from the planet because their gizzards weighed them down!@!!

I am curious about sand substrates and would enjoy more info though...
