I'm wondering as to how extreme have you guys seen ranges in fish size from fish born from the same batch after a few months+. I'm currently raiseing 4 Jags that i bred from my F0 Niceraguans in August of 08. two of the jags are around what i believe to be an average size for fish born at that time. they are in the 3.5" range. My other 2 is where i have found extreme differences. I sold my camera so i can't get pics now.

The largest fastest growing fish is a VERY Bulky 5"+ male.

The other fish is the runt- i'd say it would be lucky to break the 1" mark and is scrawny as sin.

all 4 fish were born in late aug 08. so they have been growing for around 4 months.

Have you guys noticed similar growth difference among your fish?

From the last Festae batch I bred I kept three. One is 8", one is 6" and one is 4".

how old?

Just over a year now.

Runts who won't really grow is common I think. Those would be the ones in nature who don't survive but do because they're in a controlled environment.

There are normally runts, which are culled. But for others, hormones can slow down some siblings as well. Once fish reach their growth spurt stage, normally midway into adult size, they will all catch up or even surpass their larger siblings if they are split up.

I may be completely out of place to answer since I'm not speaking from the perspective of a breeder but I have had a few instances of drastically different growth rates in sibling specimens.
One for example:

I purchased 3 uros from PetSmart, all at the same time. The large male grew quickly and so did the female. To keep aggression down I separated the dominant male and female into two different tank. I lost track of the third assumed runt. Last I'd seen of him I moved several fish from my 135 to my 80 including the runty male and female. Months later the dominant male was 7-8", the female 6-7. The runt, about 2". Hardly grew an inch since purchase.

Yupp I have noticed this with my Jag fry as well. My first ever batch from them showed it the greatest. I had one Fry grow WAY WAY faster than the rest. He was 4" while the others were just gettin to 1" maybe 1.5". Named him jumbo but I sold him when he turned 6". I thought it would be best to get rid of fry and offspring to help me take care of all my other tanks. Now I just sell them after free swimming until they get about 1"

well out of my red snook x trimac babies that were eggs in aug 08 they now range from 1.5 inch to 4 inches possibly bigger. its hard to tell which one is actually my largest seeing im raising alot them 100-150. i just tried pulling one of the 1.5 inchers body out of one of my larger ones but just ripped it in half and the rest is still stuck in his throat. so out of the same batch i have sizes that range from 1.5 inch to 4 inch.
