So... I just moved into a house that already has a pond! I'm guessing It's 150 to 200 gal(prob 6x2x16"). It's in total disrepair now. I have to drain it or maintain it(mosquitos). How do you all control algae outside?

go to a pet shop purchase alage eaters, rosy reds, koi, feed goldfish. any of those fish will eat alage but only to a minimum
if the pond is in direct sunlight than thats the problem i built a pvc structure over my pond nd draped it with a very thick black netting . and that stopped my alage problem. but my structure/roof looks like a big green house with a pond on the inside.

Before you race off to buy some fish what sort of filtration does the pond have .
What do you want from you pond crystal clear water so you can see your aquatic friends or more of a water garden.
Once you have decided on these things then you can set it up to suit your needs.

Actually, mosquitoes will never breed in moving water. They prefer stagnant water. Of course, adding fish that will eat them is not a bad idea. Mosquito fish and guppies are often used for this purpose. Mosquito fish are a little more nippy than guppies which is why I prefer guppies in this case.

As far as algae is concerned, there are many various methods to minimize them. UV sterilizers, barley, plants and cutting off lights (more practical for indoor ponds and tanks) to name a few. Adding several plants will allow them to compete with algae for foods. I've noticed in my experience the addition of hornworts and Egeria densa tend to eliminate the green floating algae.

With UV sterilizers, the algae must pass through the system in order to be destroyed. In this sense, it cannot destroy filamentous algae, green spot algae and diatoms that will never pass through the system at all.

Do you plan to use the pond at all?

Overplanted and Overfiltered keeps my water crystal clear.

So, I put a pump on the lion head thing to have a little circulation. Then added 15 comets and 15 minnows. I'm hoping along with the tadpoles they'll take care of the mosquitos.

Any pics?

How big is the pump on the lion?

Still going to need some form of bio. and mech. filtration for long term health of the fish and pond.

You've got quite a few filter options, as Lupin said. A UV should sort out your algae.

Pictures will help to get a better idea of what is going on?
