I am in the middle of setting up a 560 gal tank that will be moderately stocked with central and south american cichlids.
my filtration will be 3 mag18 pumps placed inside my overflow box that are ran up to 3 rubbermaid containers on top the tank with my mechanical and bio in them than will flow back into the tank.

Knowing that I will need a prefilter for the pumps and that the prefilter that comes with the pumps clog easy and cut down on the flow dramaticly I was thinking of putting filter socks in place of the prefilters.

I already have it planed out as to how i will acomplish this but I have a few questions.

1 Will 4'' x 16'' x 100 micron socks be too small for mag18's ( I already have them)?
2 Will I have problems with the socks cloging in a moderately stocked cichlid tank?
3 with filtersocks as a prefilter on the pumps I dont think I will need any mech. filtration in my rubbermaid containers with my bio. Do you?

imo, you will have more hassle with the pumps being set up that way, and having to clean them all the time. have you considered looking into a more traditional set up, with having a sump and the return pump there? there are a couple of recent threads with good clear pics of similar setups. just my opinion tho, as i'm also looking in to filter my own "project" tank now...

They will clog quick at first, and then once a balance is reached much slower. You will still need to replace/clean then often possible daily. they make huge filter socks in every micon rating, you could possibly get one that will cover the whole opening of the over flow.

IMHO I would use malta matte filter inside the overflow as your pre filter and then use the filter sock on the gravity drain.

:Edit dang it got beat to the first reply while I was typing :-)

I wish I could have the traditional setup but with my tank being 4ft tall I had to build a short stand not alowing enough room for a sump underneath it and I am limited on room in my garage where it will be set up so overhead filtration is my only option.
It also has a big overflow box that the pumps are already set up in and I still have plenty of room for the prefilter or filtersocks or whatever route that I take.

It will be on a freshly setup tank that will not have to cetch up on the stuff that you would see on tanks that are set up for a while.
I am just worried about will it keep up down the road once my fish gain some size on them and become the messy machenes that cichlids become.

IMHO you will have to replace the sock at least 1 a day, that is why I suggested a filer matte or bonded pad as a pre-filter. This way you dont have to dig it out the tank to clean it. placing the filter sock on the drain will give you clean water also, and be easier to take of an clean.
