Just a quick question if anyone has time. I found the answer to this before, but been reading so much I forgot it.

Anyways, I'm planning on setting up my first aro tank and would really like to have 1 black aro mixed with some type of asian aro/s. I know that you have to have quite a few to reduce agression, but I wouldnt want to many as Id like them to stand out more individually and give them as much space as i can.

So my questions are:

1. Can I mix 1 Black with Asians?
2. How many Asians would be needed at least? (would really like to just have 1 black and 2 Asians if possible)

Tank: either 6x2x2 or 8x2x2 (upgrading later on isnt a problem)

I know theres no gaurantees when it comes to keeping the peace but still like to hear opinions ;)

if you put 1 black aro with 2 x asian aros the black will just sit back and watch the asian aros fight it out you will need a min of 4-5 asian aros

It is always going to be hit or miss. You can probably get away with a black and two asians because in general blacks are the least aggressive, but you never know. The 8x2x2 would be best. Also use a couple powerheads and have them set on timers to change the flow. This will keep them from fighting over the calmest water.

Thanks guys. Definitely stuff Il be thinking about.

Still in the planning stages. Might begin working on the tank and setup in a week or two. Still have alot of research to do. So lost when it comes to understanding the different varieties of asians.

Anyways, sun is coming up, bed time. Thanks again, much appreciated.

Hi, I have a 210 gallon tank, and have 2 Arowanas in there, one is a 24-26 silver, and the other is a 22-24 green, they were only mixed together 3 maybe 4 months ago, and they seem to be getting along very well now. The green is definately the most dominant in the tank, and commands the best swimming space when the lights are on, but generally they get on very well, they are also with 2 tin foil barbs, and 2 red parrots. They never fight over food, its just a race as to who can eat the most the quickest!

What ever you do, get the biggest fish you can afford, as they are much easier to keep the bigger they are. The very small ones always seem to be a lot more fragile. My recommendation from the experience I have had is to get them no smaller than 8 inches.

Good luck, Mike.

Thanks mike. Was wondering what would be the best size to go for.

Going back to what T!KARMANN said, does the 4-5 rule only apply to keeping the same type of aro? I mean, would it be fine to have 1 black and 1 asian? Kind of like Mike's, but instead of silver it would be a black and instead of a green it would be a different variety of asian.

I dont know what it is, but Im really drawn to the black aro for some reason. ^^

I'l most likely be setting up more aro tanks in the future, doing alot of renovations at home and already alloting space for future tanks. But my first aro tank will be my personal "prized pet" tank, so kinda want it to be perfect for me and for the fishies. :)

I have blacks with asians. Silvers with Jars and asians.Asians with Jars, you name it.

One just has to be watchfull and sperate when need be. One of my aussies lives alone, for instance.

If you're doing a custom tank, I would go wide as possible. Why stop at 2'?
Go 3' if possible. More turning space.
Good luck on your project, Arch.

Been thinking bout that too. Also considering an "L" shape in a corner. Combination of 8ft and 6ft length, but need to spend some more time in the DiY section.

Planning on making a fish room after this tank is running (couple months down the line), so was thinking of keeping things simple with this one but 3' is still do-able. And thanks.

But going back to Aros... if I mixed 1 black and 1 asian, would their gender make any difference in terms of agression?

6x2x2 is not enough for one aro. 8x2x2 is good enough until one reaches 22inches. imo, buy one beautiful red arowana. or if you have a pond, throw 8 in and one xback. blacks are sensitive up until 12 inches so hopefully you get it over that size. enjoy!!
