does beneficial bacteria survive in cold water or in a filter that hasnt been used in months?

im in the process of cycling a 75 gallon tank that came with a used fluval 405 that is just filled with the excrement from the last use. should i clean it before hooking it to my tank or save some to try and seed the new tank?

Sent from my SGH-T679 using MonsterAquariaNetwork App

Its better to thoroughly clean/sanitize the filter and media then risk introducing diseases or parasites. Personal I'd spend the $30 and get all new media.

I agree, and also suggest using "Stability" as a bit of insurance......... 30 tanks have had the benefit in my houses ........

or borrow a little seeded media from an established tank......

The BB you want will essentially hibernate in cold water for a time, but they don't create spores, so will die from lack of food, oxygen or being dried out. Agree with above that it's better to sanitize the filters /media (kill any existing bacteria) and start fresh.
