I just moved my betta to a larger tank and now I'm realizing that it keeps on flaring its gills and from the front it looks like giant ears, but from the back, it looks like its all red. Is this normal? It looks kind of weird, especially since I just noticed it. It's also moving a lot more, is that normal?

LOL...It is just happy with plenty of space to roam around.;)

Most likely reason why your betta's gills are flared like that is because he is reacting to the gouramis, and not because of the new space.

Both male bettas and male gouramis (the two species are really closely related by the way) are territoral and aggressive towards their own kind and having both together with all the flashy, long fins and stuff...well you get the idea. If there's plenty of space, it won't be too serious, but having them together can get kind of ugly.
