i am going to be setting up a second tank thats 30 gallons and i was planning on breeding some platies or mollies for fun and to use as feeders. i want to not be a huge project (as in i dont want to have more then one tank going). this tank will be in my room so i want it to look good as well as have some breeders in there for fun. so i was wondering if there are any other piecefull fish that could go with the platies to add some variety to the tank? also would ghost shrimp be ok to be in this tank or will they eat all the fry? thanks for all the advice.

People say for livebearers that you just need lots of hiding places, I cannot attest to this as being true. I have bread them for years, mostly in my dutch style tanks (very heavily planted), and all fry were still eaten. I would put a divider in and put mom in there when shes ready to drop and move her back out when she drops.

Granted a divider won't really add to the aesthetics, but if you get a good one (i.e. not the cheap teal ones) if won't really subtract either. As long as you have a safe place for them all you have to do is feed them. I use BBS when I have time, but the hikari first bites work in a pinch.

Breeding bbs is easier than you'd think, I just have 2 mason jars hooked up to an air pump. I buy the tubes of BBS eggs and follow the instructions on the package. The only difference is I add some baking soda to raise the pH. I use more than 1 so I can rotate hatchings and have a constant supply.
