Question on Catlocarpio siamensis

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just kept them for 2 months in earthen pond. I was buying 7 pcs but 1 died, size when purchase was 2.5 inches but now (Aug 17,2011) they are 6 inches (including tail), probably around 0.3 kg weight each by now. I kept them together Mekong Giant Catfish (Pangasianodon Gigas) and common carp! The growth rate of Giant carp is equal with common carp as I also bought common carp (cyprinus carpio) with the same size. Perhaps within 6 months, when common carp slower growing then the giant carp will exceed the size. The reason why I kept those 2 giants because I want to break world record of LARGEST FRESHWATER FISH!

The nominees are Mekong Giant Catfish (said max length 3 m and max weight 300 kg) and Giant Siamese Carp (max length is 3 m but weight is unproportional 300 kg)

If the length of Giant Siamese Carp is 3 meters then it should weight 600 -750 kg!
I kept them in my earthen pond in Indonesia, hopefully can reach 3 meters within 15-20 years, then I will invite all members here to watch....
Cheers

Interesting.

Where did you happen to get your Gigas? I've seen Giant Carp appear sporadically in the trade, but never heard of Pangasianodon Gigas in the aquatic pet trade.

Ive keep 4 of them. My first 2 got them last year in June at around 4" they are now about 10-12". They are not fussy with water pretty easy to keep like other common barbs like Tinfoil barbs. I do nothing special never have I try to keep my ph above 7, Ive had it drop to 6.5 never lower so can't say if they can handle lower ph. Temps in the summer have gotten as high 86F, winter down to 74F-72F no problems. They only eat pellets and never from he surface. Only since they have gotten bigger I have seen them come close to the surface just below and suck pellets down then quickly dart back down. They can be very skittish at times. Sudden movements in front of tank or just turning off or on the lights can cause a violent panic and dart around. They are very peaceful non aggressive ever. They like to hang together if you had 6 or more they'd probably school. Great fish one of my favorites. I'd get more if I could.
