If I was to swap out the filter I have now and put another one in place of it, will this throw my tank through another cycle?? Or will everything be ok? Or should I start the new filter on the tank while the one is still on it and after a week or so remove the one I want to remove??

Here is what I would suggest.

1. If at all possible, use old media in new filter (your tank will not need to cycle.)

2. Put new filter on tank with new media in filter, shut off old filter, take your old media out and squeeze as much junk out as you can and let it lay in the tank. (This way will allow your cycle to stay complete while seeding your new media), then slowly remove old filter media.

3. Put new filter on and leave old filter in its place

But instead of a week, leave it on for a month or so if your able too. Also as stated move some old media into the new filter if possible as well...Bio balls, or rings, or sponge, doesn't matter.
