I am looking at flats in my area and nowhere on the website it says anything about pets, ive looked everywhere on the sites! Should I enquire about keeping exotic pets there or not mention them atall? I mean, they make no noise to keep neighbours awake, they're most definatly not gonna escape and I dont see why its they're business to know what I keep to be perfectly honest.

Cheers,
Keith

And i'm sure this is the right section of the forum lol. Its a vote basically, I think im gonna go with not telling them a thing then if they find out simply say, I was told nothing against pets atall

Ask, and if the answer is "Yes, you can keep pets" get it in writing. You don't want the hassle of being caught violating your rental agreement.

I'll be sure to. What could happen if you violate the rental agreement?

You could be evicted and find it harder to get another place. It's also possible your animals could be confiscated, if your landlord insists on it.

if it does not mention it in the lease then you are okay. My apartments had a flier that mentioned that there were not to be any venomous reptiles (apparently it was a problem once before) but in the lease it only mentioned dogs so I am safe. I was confronted by the apartment manager but once I showed him the lease they were cool with it. The maintenance guy even brought his daughter over to see my animals.

Really depends on what the lease says (and doesn't say) and the landlord. There are a lot of variables that are situation dependent. Have to be ready for anything as well. You may not get notice they are entering if its an emergency or maintenance issue or if the landlord is nosy and whatnot.

If its not in writing in a contract, the landlord can't do anything about it. If they want to alter the contract to reflect a no-exotic pet rule, then they should have to give you the option of opting out of your contract without any penalties, or letting you keep your animals until your current contract is up. It could depend on your local laws though, so be sure to read up on landlord-tenant rights issues for your area.

I would ask them beforehand what their policy is, and ask for a copy of a contract to review prior to signing any agreements. Then follow that contract to the letter to make sure that they can't confiscate anything or evict you for having them. And ALWAYS make sure to keep at least one copy of the contract, so that you have something to show them (and possibly a court or judge) in case anything does come up.
