I was going to post this in breeding FORUM, but I figured I would get more responses in here about hybridizing then in there. Don't want my thread full of Black Convict Hippies and guppy yuppies.

This is a serious Question. No Flaming or Derailing.

I have been planning a breeding project for some time now. I finally got my growout tank (300g).

I have been wanting to try my hand at Red Texas. My original plan was to Breed a Male Red Devil With my Female Carpintis. Then Take the best one from that batch and breed with either Father or Mother. And just have at it with as many generations as I could until I got results. Should I stick with this?

Heres the choices for first gen. parents;

- RD / Carpintis
- SRT / Carpintis
- SRT / RD
- SRT / SRT

Let me know what you think, problems, suggestions and/or advice. Feel free to PM me advice also if you're quiet about your hybridizing secrets. I will keep quiet if need be.

Just a nugget of info...

Father - Pearls/Body
Mother - Color

I woudl flip around your plan and you can start but just to make sure you understand the RT/SRT market is drying up and its almost not worth the effort. You going to need to do lots of line breeding to make the genes stable and if you want to make it your going to need to spice up the fish some how.

Well I figure if I can find a line of Red devil with a good Kok, that might spice it up a bit. That's one reason I chose RD over KKP. Thats one of the big trates I'm a fan of.
I could try and make a short body strane?.....That might be interesting. The only problem is I'm not a big fan of SB hybrids. I want to breed them for me. Not just for resale value. And you are right, the demand isn't as high as it once was. Seems more so on the west coast than the east coast though.

Maybe I should just stick with breeding FH's...? It's just that everywhere I turn around, "oh look, FH!" Everyone has a FH or at least can get one. Where I live SRT's arent as abundent and seem to be in higher demand. Just might be me though. I don't know what to think anymore to tell you the truth.

I never see SRT around me.
Only very low grade Flowerhorn that look like dookie.
:D

Well I think I'm going to do two projects.

1- Breeding SRT from scratch
2- Use true SRT as 1st Gen. ( In process of buying one)

Then I'll compare each as I Go through the generations.
How does that sound?

Well KKP are the high end of a parrot batch and there is devil blood in them. A good portion or quality kkp have nice heads.

From what I have seen with the RT/SRT market there are too many now and its a fish typically a hybrid hobbyist will own one once and thats about it. Go check out Aquabid every seller has some available now at bargain prices which wasn't the case a couple of years ago. I think enough people have been burned with non fading RT and left a bad taste.

The list of red texas has 13 for sale

The list of FH has well over 150

Seems to be a slight difference of quantity.

I'm not trying to be a D-bag. I'm just pointing it out.
