Recently i noticed a build up of an oil like film with some flakes on the surface which i skim away manually but comes back within 24 hours. is this normal? or what are the likely sources

water parameters are unchanged from previously

its a 100 gallon with 1 arowana in the tank and nothing else.

thanks for any replies.

Is this an established tank?

Anything changed (food / fish / equipment)?

To help get rid of it you can float a tennis ball in the tank, it will p/u most of it. They also make a ball for hot tubs that works the same way.

And for those of us who don't prefer sports equipment in our tanks, surface skimmers seem to work well for canister and power filters, right?

Anyone try out the Aqua-clear surface skimmers?

I have AquaClear skimmers on my 75G & 150G. Both are hooked to XP3 filters. Water surface has been absolutely clear for 12 months. My film is so bad that when I turn off the XP3s for a few minutes during water changes, the surface is completely covered with oily film in minutes.

Make sure you have no air freshners running such as Renuzit® my 2 cents:naughty:

run carbon if you aren't already, and with plaenty of surface aggitation it should be picked off by the filter

Yep, airstone does the trick!
