hi all,
just wanting to know, if a 12mm thick tempered glass is equal to the streght of a 15mm thick regular glass when used to make a tank, with dimension of 2.5m (L) x 80cm (w)x 70cm (h), by using safety factor of 3,8 ?
if so, could I still make the tank deeper/higher ( say + 10cm) by using the same 12mm tempered glass,
pls advice,
thanks

Most calculators will not provide a strength difference for tempered vs standard plate as there is a lot of variablility in the tempering process. General practice is to follow the same rule of thumb for both.

thats true, was just wandering because it is said that tempered glass is four to five times stronger than the regular glass.

I talked to a guy at GLASSCAGES yesterday about glass options. He said in most cases tempered is overkill and over priced we discused my hopefully soon to come 600gal build. he said any thing over 35" tall you wanna try to get 3/4" standard plate glass, under 35" tall 1/2" standard plate glass is more than acceptable. Also depends on total length but not as much depending on your bracing.

thanks for the answer, I have decided to use a 10mm x 2 laminated regular glass, so the thickness is now 20mm, which is still cheaper than a 15mm thick regular glass. There is quiet a bit of money to spend with the current tank that I make. I think the lenght could be made as long as 3 meters but unfortunately I just dont have the room for it.
cheers
