question on undergravel jets

hey i was wondering if i want to crate one... whats the best pump i should use for a 30-55 gallon tank?

I don't quite understand what your trying to do...An UGF plate driven in a reverse flow arrangement by a powerhead will keep your substrait clear and force debris up into the tank where the filter intakes can pick it up. You could also use drilled pcv pipe to do the same thing but it wouldn't cover the whole bottom of the tank.

so hook the powerhead ( with reverse) up to a piping system with ports for the spray?

yes. that should work quite well....in fact you can even hook an air line to the powerhead if you want bubbles.
