How many people vacuum the substrate during water changes? Is it needed? I've always done it that way, but think I may have been wrong.

depend on your stock. If you have messy fishes like oscar, vacuuming at least once a week is considered minimum.

For me, I prefer once a week even though my fish isn't messy. Just like clean gravel :)

I alternate my water changes. which I do every 10th, 20th , 30th of every month. So on the 10th I will change water and olny clean my filters. On the next water change I will clean only the gravel and so on. But I do feel that debri in the gravel does eventually break down and is picked up by the filters.
