I was lead to believe that wolf fish were more of an ambush predator. I expected more of a inactive lurker. I have two smallish mala and the activity level is surprising. They are quite active, and are on the go quite often. They turn into little cruise missles when anything hits the water. The big one almost seems to beg for food. Did I just luck out or is it just because they are still juviniles?

I've read people claiming they get lazier as they get bigger, but ime it really depends on the specimen, I had one that hovered almost 24/7 at the top waiting for food at a foot who let me pet him softly and even pick him up out the water a little, and I've had lazy ones as well.

Mine are more active if they are hungry or sense food in the water. LOL!

But generally Curupiras will be more active followed by Aimara and the rest.

I think he was asking about mala specifically. But lacerdae may be more active than curus though we don't have enough confirmed specimens or people posting of their experiences and confirming it to go by, DB's Lucy is very active going by wolf standards for hoplias species. And my curu isn't all that active till lights out, then he hovers all night around the tank. He used to come up for krill but then he got a taste of massivore and waits infront at the bottom where I drop it in when he's hungry. I think aimara and curu go hand in hand depending on the specimen.

It depends on the time of day and the age of the fish.

Mine was a cruiser in the tank between 4-14'' in length, as soon as the clock hit 8pm. It was in a windowless basement, the sun had nothing to do with it. Timer turned lights off two hours later.

Once 16'', it was still a rocket when shrimp hit the water, but a lurker all other times.
