I just removed a royal pleco because it was like a fecal factory. Im thinking about getting a group of Geos but Im reading that they produce a lot of waste and I cant stand a tank with waste all over the place. Are they really messy? I would think their sifting would keep the substrate clean. Thanks for any advice

I wouldn't say they produce a lot of waste, probably the same amounts as any similar sized fish, and yes the sifting does help break it up and keep the substrate somewhat cleaner. Just see what fits your tank, some species can get to a pretty good size.

The ones in your avatar are gorgeous. What are they? I like Altifrons, Suranamensis and Winemilleri. Tank would be a 180

I have asked him that before too. They are geo red heads under special lighting/camera function. Really cool picture. Wish there was a fish that actually looked like that. :)

You can fit a group of any geos in a 180. I have a soft spot for altifrons personally, but Gage is selling 3" F1 winemilleri for $11 each (cichlidconnection.com), which is a great price considering people on Aquabid want $35 per 4" winemilleri. You could do a large group of 6-8 geos with a few tankmates.

Yes, the Geos from my avatar are Orange Head Tapajos (also called Red Head Tapajos) taken with a filter app. The colors are saturated to appear brighter than they are, but when my LED lights hit them just right they can look similar in person. A really exceptional looking fish, one of my favorites. You should be able to find "actual" pictures pretty easily.

In a 180, you have plenty of options, PM replied to...

Would highly recommend GEOS such as Redhead Tapajos, mines sift through the sand constantly rarely see waste. :)

I have read conflicting articles about Atrifrons most say both species would be fine, as far as Winemilleri have not read anything negative about them.:).

Could you keep say a group of Winemilleri with a group of red heads? What about altifrons with red heads?

You should be able to keep the two together. I would highly recommend growing the out together to help avoid potential problems between the two species in the future. Red heads get to be 6-8", though 4-6" is a more common size. Both altifrons and winemilleri can reach 10-12", but 8-10" is more common as well. So not a huge difference in size, but remember they are still cichlids and even though many species of geo are pretty peaceful, you can still get aggressive individuals.
