Hello, I am new to MFK and I visit it everyday, being very interesting.

I have a redtail catfish for the past 5 months, now being about 15cm long. Today after feeding it, it vomited everything...or nearly everything. Now it is resting on the bottom of the aquarium but gasping. Apart from a water change what should I do?

Thanks

My tank is 550 litres. I have currently a trickle filter at about 2200 litres per hour and another two Attman filters with a combined power of about 1500 litres per hour. i use to feed him about once every two days, filling him realy to the full and the next day he will not be searching for food at all.

Im curious, how big is your tank? what filteration are you running? And how often do you feed?

You had your RTC for 5 months and its only 6". They grow really fast, even one that is fed every few days should be bigger than that. It sounds like it could be stunted.

hmmm strange, he has a 100+g tank. May he measured the little kittie wrong :naughty:

Vomiting is not unusual for the RTC, gasping is a bit more worring though.

Water change is the only thing i can think of too and don't overfeed cos RTC will over eat

A waterchange and less food. Get a test kit and check your water parameters. Was the tank cycled before you added the RTC? Are there any tank mates?

Hello. I bought the RTC at about one inch and now it is 15-20cm long. The tank was already cycled and had fish in it, for about the past 7 months now.

He has some tanks mates like 3 clarias about 13-14 inch each, an asian upside down catfish nearly 1 foot, 3 high fin plecos, sorubim lima shovel nose at about 11 inch, and a 10 inch giant gourami.....but they do not disturb him at all. However, I have plans taht in the near future I will upgrade to an indoor pond.

The even worrying thing ....when i woke up...i found that he has a bag like structure comming out from between his gills...I checked him out and I think he vomited his stomach out since it seems to be connected to the inside and has veins on it....He is still gasping and I am noticing that the skin over his head is getting wrinkled. However he is still on the bottom of the aquarium and can swim "normally". I think this is a lost case....

Hello, the RTC is back to normal....not gasping and the bag like structure just disappeared. However he looks a bit stressed, otherwise normal but not gasping! Now I think I will leave him 2-3days without food and then I will try to give him just a few to test. What do you think? Btw...thanks for the help!

Btw....anyone has a clue on what that bag like thing, that came out from his right gill was?

Until now he is ok...ie...not gasping and moving around quite normally.

Thanks
