Does a tank need to sit on a platform that is perfectly flat?,,,,,for instance,,,if i put a 108 gal. tnk on a stand with 1/2 inch plywood as a top ( we all know that its not perfectly flat),,,is ther any risks involved,,,,,,should i get a thick peice of that white shelving material,,,,of some 1/8 inch foam that goes under laminate flooring?

Glass or acryllic? If it's a framed glass tank, so long as the frame in on a flat even surface, the rest of the stand top doesn't matter (so long as no part is touching the glass bottom. If you're dealing with an acryllic tank, the stand's surface needs to be as smooth as possible to avoid pressure points that can lead to stress cracks. I us cheapo 1/2" blue camping pads between the stand and tank. These pads insulate and cushion my acryllic tanks against any imperfections I may have missed in the stands. I got the pads at Wal-Mart.

I agree with Mr. Odd.

Glass aquariums that are 6' long or less typically just need the 4 corners or outter bottom edge supported. It is most important that the 4 corners are level with each other so the glass isn't in a twist.

If this is an acrylic tank, the entire bottom will need support. I do the top of my acrylic stands "joists" every 12" or so and lay a sheet of plywood across the top for a strutu flat surface. Make sure all the screw heads are countersunk!!!

If your a little concerned about straightness of the top of your stand, A sheet of styrofoam insulation will help correct any imperfections. I use the cheepie 1/2: stuff at lowes or homedepot. It will give support where you need it and crush where you don't.
