what does a protein skimmer do for your tank?

is a surface skimmer the same i dont think so but?

i think i was on reef central im not a traitor but
any one know where or how to to find how they make the concrete rock stuff

thank sean g

A protien skimmer just what the name implies...

It extracts excess protiens from your water, that are harmful to the fish.

It produces an extreme amount of pin head bubbles. The harmful protiens stick to those bubbles and are lifted upwards, to a collection cup.

It's not a mandatory thing to have, but you'll regret not getting one.

Also, just search RC for the rock thread. There are many, many of them.

A protein skimmer removes soluble proteins from the water column by passing the water through tightly packed, very fine air bubbles. Proteins stick to the bubbles and are ejected from the skimmer and ultimately from the tank. It's essentially the same foam-like material you might see on a lake/sea shore.

A surface skimmer simply draws water from the surface of the water. It just so happens to be where proteins end up but they are 2 different pieces of equipment.

As for how to make concrete rock stuff, I'm assuming you mean for aqaurium use. Do a search for DIY backgrounds and I'm sure you'll have plenty of hits.

I typed my response at the same time as AW2EOD. Sorry for doubling up on the info. :)
