will a gar really bite a frayed rope? has anyone ever caught one on a rope?

i believe richard has experience with this, and from what he's told me (and from the main gar fishing site with countless other photos) yes, a gar will take a frayed rope when presented with it properly. i've also caught them on a hook with a worm...but it was presented in similar fashion that one may present a frayed rope (just had to set the hook quickly since that's a tough thing to do with gars) --

Unless your in an area that is thick with them you have to sight fish them if you expect any luck.. Generally when trying to get a Longnosed on a rope lure you toss it about 10 feet off in front or to the side from where you think the fish will be. Idea is to get it in front of it and at an angle that will elicit a strike. If the fish strikes you let off for about a count of ten then "let her roll" If the fish grabbed it it will roll and get quickly tangled. Hold on from here on and enjoy the show.. These fish jump run and you name it once tangled on a rope.

Untangling them is a whole other art form but I do suggest gloves or a specially made board where you can secure the fish.

Spotted, shorts and gators are better caught with other fishing equipment. Ropes do not work as well with these as with Longnosed.

well since there is no other gar species that i know of in lake lanier then this will probably work if i can find some gars. i want to catch one 2' or alittle less to go in with my 18" longnose. where do gars of this size hang out?? cuz i have looked everywhere that i have been around the lake.

Good question.... In fact this is something that I have long been working on around here. Yearling Longnosed gar up until maturity seem to be about anywhere and are very hard to pinpoint and locate. Juveniles and Young of the year are usually easy and adults are also easy to locate. This in between stage of YoY and maturity is very elusive. Best success I have had so far is either at night (in typical longnosed habitat) or just by the luck of running across one. These fish while at this smaller post juvenile size really do not regularly make themselves known.
