I don't think they're especially smart. They display a honed predatory instinct from millenia evolving into a particular niche in one of the worlds most dangerous rivers. I don't think they're really apex predators either, I think they're more the Amazon's janitors. It's hard to claim apex status when your neighbors are freshwater dolphins. payara, arapaima gigas etc...

well there smart to form shoals in the wild for defensive perposes would that make them escpecialy smart? not really. they have advanced breeding behavoir would that make them smart though? not really. they are not as responsive as most cichlids in captivity so i would say that there intelligence is high among characins but low compared to other fish like cichlids
