What size tank do you have?

Yes, and koliveira is partially right. If you have enough plants the roots can clog the filter, I have usually broken down my ugf tanks for partial cleaning before that (I split the bottom into two sides so I don't loose all the bacteria). Roos in a ugf actually help with the filter process ( as long as you can still move water past them :D ).

Or you can pot them up, hide baskets behind rocks or create your own pots by gluing pebbles toegther to form a container.

Make sure you put something on top of the soil if you have fsh that like to dig.

Ugf filters are not too good with plants. Plant roots will grow into them as stated, and if there isn't enough mulm built up under there, or your current is too strong you will have plants that starve from nutrient deficiency. If you are only going after one or two plants, look at a piece of wood with java fern, a moss, or anubia. These plants do better rooted to the wood or rocks even. Stay away from swords, as they will stop the UGF. I have had an amazon that had roots completely covering a 55 gallon tank footprint. The roots touched both ends, front and back, and were very thick.

i have a 75 gallon with like 2 seperate ugf not one long one (if that makes sense) and each has a powerhead on it and i do have a big piece of driftwood in there i could plant on
