What is this? A filter housing or?

Is it needed? I'm buying an Ultima II and was going thru some Ultima threads and saw it on there.

I think it is a pre-filter for the pump.

Pre-filter strainer. Used more in ponds than aquaria as a large debris (leaves, twigs, etc.) trap.

It's a leaf trap made by Waterway. In it is a basket to catch debri that may jam the pump. Some pump manufacturer actual won't warranty the pump if one is not installed. Also, some external pumps are very hard to prime because of the way they are plumbed and the trap allows you to fill the line with water for start up.
