Why doesnt anyone use koi pond filters on large tank builds. Are they no good indoors do they leak just curious as u seem to get much more filtration for the money

Good question, I'd like to know this also. I'm nearing the completion of my 430 gal & will need to decide on a design soon.

A lot of the larger canister pond filters require external pumps, unlike some of the larger aquarium canisters. If you don't mind a big pump with tubing in the bottom of your tank I guess you could use them.

Plus a lot of the pond canisters don't have shutoff valves, when it times for service thats OK outside, but not under your aquarium.

If you go even larger like the Aqua Ultra Violet Ultima II filters, then you need larger more exspensive external pumps, then you need to have the waste port plumed somewhere and it just gets more involved.

I would only use pond filters on very large heavy stocked setups.

I'm actually leaning more towards converting one of my 55gal into a fluidized moving bed filter, but still doing more research.

The pump isnt that bad if its doing a good job I'd tolerate it. N I'm sure u could buy a shut off valve for maintenance

Any time people see the word pond they don't get it, water conditioner, filterd, bio media, pumps etc, it will all work, like pond matrix for example.
