I purchased a 100 gal tank recently, it came with 2 HOB's and a sump. I've had to replace the hose on the sump because of a leak, so I haven't had it up and running yet.
My question.... The fellow I got the tank from had the intake and return pipes right next to each other, shouldn't they be on oppisite ends of the tank? Or am I thinking this out wrong?

The intake in the tank is next to the return, or in the sump it is? Is the return at the top or bottom of the tank?

A picture would clear things up a bit. Having both next to each other in the tank is not the ideal way of doing it, but it will work. The intake (usually) skims the surface and the return is under pressure. The returning water jets to the bottom of the tank, away from the pick up.

The intake and return were on the same end of the aquarium. The way he had it set up is the return is in the back corner of the tank, the end of the return was just under the skimmer/intake, and the return hose was held in the corner by the skimmer.
Sorry, I have no pictures of it because it is dismantled right now.
My question is, should the intake/skimmer be on one end of the tank, and the return on the other end.
I'm haveing to hard plumb it (PVC) because I can't find hose to fit, and I'd like to get it right the first time.
Thank you for taking the time to look...........

Yes, that is the best way of plumbing it.
