At my desk
In an attempt to feed my pangasius sanitwongsei a varied diet I picked up some catfish bait. I tried contacting the company that makes it but I havent heard back from them yet, hopefully just because of the holiday. Does anyone know if there is any nutrional value to this stuff? It stinks to high heaven but they seem to like it (the dog likes it too), what i have been doin is breaking it up, jamming sinking carnivore pellets into it and rolling it into balls. The sinking pellets usually get lost in the substrate so this is my preferred method of getting them to eat them.

They also are regularly fed;

Frozen bloodworms
Frozen beefheart
Frozen mysis shrimp
feeders about once every two weeks, sometimes ghost shrimp
nightcrawlers from the baitshop

I swear they eat better than I do, my fridge would be empty if it werent for the beer and fish food

they also have managed to eat 90% of the algae wafers that go in for my pleco, a 4" pictus catfish, 3 convicts, about 7 giant danios........ pretty much everything that was in there that is big enough to fit in their mouths with the exception of 1 giant danio and 1 convict.

They are about 6.5" to 7" right now; and before you start in on me about how big they will get know that I am in the process of building a 750 gallon "enclosure" (its not really an aquarium, not really a pond), for them that will be complete by the spring, its been a slow but steady process and I promise to post all the pics when its complete. I rent now so this enclosure will house them until i take up a permanent residency and can do what i please with my space

It probably tastes good and won't hurt them, but I bet nutritonal value is zero. I would feed it as a treat only, not as a staple.

Avoid the baits. Most use bloodmeal that does nasty things to your biofilter. Also, alot of commercial baits use a synthetic stink scent marketed as "liquid ass". I'm fairly certain it won't contribute anything pleasant to the ambience of your home.
You'd be better off buying yourself commercial sinking catfish pellets from most feed & grain outlets. I buy 50 pound bags for $16.99 from the outlet a mile down the street. It's the same pellets used in catfish farming and is low ash with a crude protein of 40%.

thanks for the quick replies!

Do you know the name of the manufacturer/distributor for the commercial stuff; I'd like to track some of that down

Sorry for the wait. I couldn't find pics on-line so, I ran over to the hatchery to shoot a couple. The catfish pellets are actually 32% crude protein. I run a 40% mix by blending it with rabbit pellets for my crays. Sorry for the mix up.

Anywho, they're made by Land-O-Lakes so you should have an easy time finding them. Purina also has a commercial hatchery feed assortment.

Or you could get a second mortgage and feed Hikari Sinking Carnivore. Stuff is awesome but expensive as hell.
