Hey guys,

Getting a 240g for my bday from mates (and a little extra on my behalf) so i want to setup a sump for it but need some questions answered.

What rate should the pump be?

Would a 3ft tank be sufficient?

I'm planning on having a pretty stocked tanked, at the moment i have 1 barramundi, 1 pbass, 1 sailfin pleco and an oscar but i want to add another 2 or 3 cichla and the odd fish here and there but no 'cramping'

Any friendly advice/tips would be appreciated.

Yeah a 3' will work, I'm just about finished one for my 220g tank:

The pump should flow a minimum of about 4 x your tank volume per hour(depending on how messy and big the fish are that you keep) at the head height it will be used at (usually around 1.5m?) So you will want a pump rated at probably around 1000gph?

Should i have the tank drilled as i am a bit nervous about this because the tank is not cheap (for me anyways).

Thanks for your reply Hardboiled, and i have read your fantastic thread on the wet/dry - good work!

I think im going to get a pro in to set it up for me as i am a perfectionist and i wont even buy a 2nd hand tank.

The only way to have it perfect is to do it yourself. That way if there is a problem you'll know how to fix it. You'll feel more comfortable with your system if you do it yourself. Thats what i've found out anyway.

If you have the opportunity to get it drilled then definitely do it. Otherwise you will be kicking yourself down the track when its set-up full of water and you wish you had it drilled! ;)

If you dont drill it now, you will have to buy an overflow box anyhow which will probably be more expensive than having the tank drilled to start with.

The tank I'm currently setting up has 3 holes in the back panel just below the water line(2 drains and 1 return), but another tank I have has a single hole in the corner with a baffle(weir?) set up. The weir arrangement takes up more useable tank space but at the moment I think its a better option. Until I finish setting up my current tank I cant really give an informed opinion on which is better?
