I found an axolotl for sale at a LFS, about 2 inches long, going for $60. :WHOA:
Is this a fair price for the little guy?
Or does anyone know of anywhere that might sell these more regularly in or near Madison, WI?

You might be able to find one online cheaper but you have to factor in shipping $$$ as well. Honestly don't sweat the cash, if it's something you want don't worry about the price, pull the trigger. I don't care about a good deal or not if it's something I really want..

I'm gonna sleep on it. I'm slightly worried that I might not be able to keep the water cool enough. My apartment stays quite warm and as much as it breaks my heart to say so, it might have to wait for an undetermined amount of time. I can live with the $60 for the little guy, I wouldn't have considered it otherwise, but the cost of a cooling unit might be out of the question at this moment.

That's high. I got 2 GFP type for less than that. We keep the house at 76-80 and keep 2 small fans on the aquarium and the water stays below 70 ... open screen top. Evaporative cooling.

Anyway, what color?

It was mostly light blue with green speckles all over. I'm not too sure if they darken with age or not, but if not, I haven't seen this color online at all.

check caudata.org for sale site. i got both of mine on there from a seller named jays. look for his ad. i know he has the glow in the dark ones for $30, and shipping for me to North Dakota was $35. he also has a tendency to add extras haha because he has so many. i ordered one leucistic and he sent me an extra melanoid for free.

cooling isn't too bad :) I bought a little fan from Target and duct taped it to the side of my tank, and it's been keeping the water around 64-68 degrees, and my apartment is HOT! a lot of people with axolotls use fans because chillers are so pricey. pm me if you want more info :)

Well, I caved and got the little guy. I couldn't resist because the coloring is so nice (I think). If you can't quite see it in the pictures, he has a light green (almost yellow/green) body with darker green and teal spotting. His frills are also dark green.

Looks almost like mine. Maybe he is GFP. This is my favorite color morph.

:)

If you shine black light and he glows, he is GFP. He should also have green eyes.

Hard to tell for sure even though you have good pics.

Lights stress them out though, so just don't keep it on!

No, I know, that's just the light in the room. I'm thinking of painting 3 sides of his tank to help darken it and putting the tank under a shelving unit so it can still keep the open top for cooling.

Also, if you look at the sand, some of it pearled up and I can't figure out how to make it all lay flat. Does that just happen over time?

I think his eyes are gold.
