I'm looking into making a sump or wet/dry system for my tank.

there are some questions i still have after researching it all.

1. i have a 90g tank, and with 5x turnover rate, i'll need around 450gph. what size pvc pipe should i be using? 1", 1.2" or 1.5"?

2. what kinda pump should i be looking at, and with what kind of flow rating?

3. what size gallon-age would my sump/wet dry need to be? do i need a 50g container, or could i have it smaller than that?

hmm... if i can think of anything else, i'll let you guys know.

1. For the pump/return line, match the pipe diameter to the pump output diameter. For the drain lines, you would want at least 1" pipe for up to 600gph. Go with 1 1/4" if you want to be safe or you decide to go a little higher on the flow rates.

2. Go with a Quiet One brand pump. There are multiple flow rates available. check out the 2200 or the 3000 model.

3. A 29G tank would work well

thanks for the info pharaoh.

i wonder if there's anywhere in southern ontario, canada to get this brand of pumps.

more questions.

1. what kind of piping should i be attaching to the pump? is this something a lfs should carry or is this more of a lowes/home depot kinda deal?

2. do i attach anything to the output end of my pump line that feeds into the tank? powerhead, etc, or can i leave it as is? i'm assuming i'll need something for direction?

sorry for the double post.

would a spraybar be acceptable, or cause me to lose alot of gph on output while having the full brunt on input? what else could i do for the output side, other than leave the hosing bare on the end.

Check out Big Als On-line. I know that they have a website for Canada.

For pump tubing, you can get it at any home improvement stores. You can either hard plumb with PVC, or you can just buy hose by the foot.

You can leave it as-is, or you can do a spraybar if you like. You shouldn't see a whole lot of difference.
