So I was at my local LFS store this morning to buy my piranhas food.
I know how feeders could possibly carry diseases and stuff but some people havent had any problems with using feeders. My piranhas are starting to get big for their little nutrition pellets so I wanna broaden my food for them, I have some fish I caught in a lake i might use (northern pike, pickerel), also silversides, and possibly using frozen pinkie mice in the future.

But I was wondering what kind of questions I should ask my LFS about THEIR feeders to decide whether or not to use them for my piranhas. (etc, how often they fed? any cases of diseases? how clean are they?)

are you serious? do you think they are going to give you an honest answer and tell you that the fish they stock for feeding purposes are not safe to feed to your fish? feeder fish are kept in terrible conditions because they are bought and sold as a quantity item, not quality.

if you want your fish to have a healthy diet, stick to the other stuff you mentioned and forget about the frozen pinkie mice and live feeders. there are just too many other options for you to feel like you need to incorporate those just to provide more foods. raw shrimp, tilapia, cod, haddock, and pollock would be other good options.

quartine your own feeders

get a 29gal with a great filter and a heater so the heat can be high to raise the motabilizm of the feeder thus healing diezeis better

buy tons of good quilty flake food
and fishy vitamin stuff
and put the feeders in your tank and let them q for 2-3weeks

hybridthoery uses bait minnows from the bait shop and dose this and it works well

edit: ooohh dear god my spelling sucks lol

why would you spend that much time, money, and effort on a food source that provides almost no nutritional value? dollar for dollar, raw shrimp, tilapia, cod, pollock, haddock, and pellets are the best food options for your fish, they also don't put your fish at risk the way that live foods do.

My pirhana got STDs?
LOL:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

Yeah avoid Pinkie mice they're not good....Silversides, is the closest to Feeder fish I'd ever go (if comets are the other option) otherwise go with the Q-Tank it's a GREAT IDEA

well i wouldnt do it lol my piranha likes mysis and tiapia

Did you say you might use a northern pike as a feeder!

Frozen silversides are a pain though. You have to slightly thaw the fish and take out what you need and refreeze the rest or break off what you need (often breaking the fish in half and having a bunch of pieces of fish). Way too messy.
