I want a gar...............but i dont see that happening any time soon however i am curious how big of a tank would you need for lets say a short nose gar or a flordia gar:confused:

Well, a gar's too big for most tanks, most owners move them to a pond later on, OR, they may have an enormous tank. 2000gal etc.
I have a 110 gal right now, but my Gar's just about 4 inches long. I'll be keeping him there until he reaches 18" or such, THEN I'll move him. They grow fast, but not amazingly fast, so you can have your gar ( for a little while ) in a small tank.

i disagree i think thats a bit exagerated. for florida/spotted IMO 250g will be good enough as to they dont grow as big like their cousins alligator and longnose.

IME and from what i read on others experience here, spotted gars grow fast when they are still young and then slowdown at maybe a year or less.

a 55 long would be a good grow out but you will eventually need something 120+. gars get very long so they need enough room to turn around!

Generally a florida/spotted gar won't grow over 24" in the aquarium; a 180G (6x2x2) is probably the minimum for an adult. I can't speak for shortnose though, they may get bigger in the aquarium.

Tank size depends on the fish and it's growth..There is actually no set rule and enormous tanks or ponds are not actually needed in a number of cases and with a few species. A 4 inch gar in a 110 is actually a very bad idea..The fish should be stepped up in tank size as it grows.. To large of a tank is just as bad as too small of a tank.

For the record they do grow amazingly fast when properly kept. When kept properly you should see explosive growth during the first year..If you do not see this you should question why..

i have a 55gallon that is 4 foot long would that work for a growout???

get a Florida gar and not a shortnose and that tank should be ok for at least 1/2-3/4 of the gar's first year. a 55g is pretty narrow at only 12" wide, so plan on bumping up to an 18" wide tank for the next 1/2-1year, OR just jump straight to a 2' wide tank (after the grow-out period in the 55g), which should hold the gar just fine for a couple years if not longer. good luck!--

florida/spotted gar will probably be better. they are the easiest species to care for and dont get as big as the other species.

simply put. the juvenile my fiance caught has already grown about 2 to 2 and a half inches. maybe alittle bigger. and mine that got eaten from the inside out by a parasite was 4" when i got him and a month later he was 6". im not saying this directly to you richard im just putting more to what you said about them growing amazingly fast.
