questions about hoplias malabaricus

i've wanted to house this wolf fish for a long time now,

happen to have an empty 80 gallon tank at the moment,
and i will start cycling it this weekend when i get my new filter.

i'm going with a filstar xp3, he will be housed alone obviously.
do you think it's enough filtration?

also does filstar xp3 come with included media?

and why do some look like this

while others look like this?

is it a regional thing? I'm looking to get the one that looks like the
first picture..
