I'm breeding cherry red shrimp, and the screen on the back of the tank where the water flow in is too big, I blocked it by wrapping pantyhose around the top foam piece but do think this is going to keep them out and tips would be helpful??? Thanks :headbang2:headbang2

Howdy,

Would love to help, but not sure what you are talking about. Pics for clarification?

my Nano cube came with an attachment for surface skimming, which might help as long as your cherry shrimp stay away from the surface

otherwise, I'll bet you could cut a piece of mesh -- maybe use a spare media bag -- and place it over the intake grill. the suction would hold it against the grill, and the mesh would prevent the shrimp from getting sucked in

not that I've ever tried it, I just think it would work . . .

Cool i will try the mesh I tried hanging the pantyhose up but did not stay,I think the way my filter is setup is backward ie media, That is the way I bought it used,And that the only thing it didnt come with was that protein screen because he said that the fish were gettin stuck in it,The sponges and carbon bag are right behind the intake, then the ammonia bag and bio balls the the third camber is the pump with bio ball on top is that right????Thanks

the recommended set-up for the NanoCube would be as follows:

> sponges behind the intake grill in the 1st chamber
> then ceramic rings, carbon and bio-balls (bottom to top) in 2nd chamber
> nothing in 3rd chamber (other than the pump)

here is a link to the JBJ NanoCube manual; since you got it used, this may help

cool thanks man, how do you keep you r algae down in your nano, I have cherry red shrimp and they cant keep up with it, but cant use chem with them???

good question . . . I have had occasional mild bouts of algae, but in general it has not been a big problem. I really don't know that I'm doing anything special, but it is a heavily planted 12G nano, with anubias, java fern and cryptocoryne. only inhabitants are a male betta and two otocinclus cats (and some very small snails)

the cats certainly help with some of the algae, and I do 20% weekly water changes and use Prime and Flourish Excel, both of which supposedly have some effects on algae

one thing I have heard you could add that might help are nerite snails; supposedly, these will eat a variety of algaes . . . I haven't seem them in any LFS that I've tried

Right on I ended up just removing one of the lights, just because adding more chemicals, and fish will disrupt the shrimp even more,I did just see a couple of my new hatching they are cool looking, Not sure when they hatched because the tank is so heavily planted, But look to be at least a week because there not too small and a good sign the pantyhose on the the foam pads was not bad idea after all.
