Hi everybody, I just got my 125gl setup this weekend. And I can wait to have it ready for an Aro. I was think black if I can find one, but a sliver will do. Once I get more experience then I will hunt a really new one down.
I have ran tanks before, but never one this big. I have plenty of goldfish and Oscar experience, but none with Aros. I have always wanted one, my Uncle had to Slivers and a Gold. My question is I know water temp should be around 82F and PH level around 7. But should there be anything else I should do or watch out for before I put any fish in the tank?

Tank Setup
125gl
2 AC 110
Airstone with pump

All info would be much appriecated.

Not that difficult to keep. Make sure you have a lid. Silver aro WILL jump the boat if the tank is not covered. Once a week water change (don't forget declor).

Nothing much to eat really. if you can get a pellet trained one then good if not then you will need to train. Food = cricket, prawns (minus head and tail), blood worms (when still small)

People say black is more difficult to keep than silver (personally never tried to keep black). Advantage of black is (also other people's feedback) lack of DE

Should you wish to keep at least three is recommended

Good luck

PS: your uncle probably had a jardini rather than gold aro (asian variety) but then again ...

Thanks for the info, I think Im gonna start out with one Aro and then go from there. I have found a baby black, about 8" long with barbels. But they want way too much for it. $350!!!!!!!!

Also do you guys think 2 AC 110 wil be good enough for now? I mean the Aro Im gonna pick up is only 10". Maybe 6 months from now I'll pick up a Ehiem 2217?

BTW when my uncle had his tank, it was 20 years ago, so Golds were pretty easy to get.

black aros and leichardti are more sensitive than any other aros. Best aro to keep for beginners is silver. I alway suggest go big or go home. 7 silvers and one jardini. if they thin out at least you'll have a community. As for bio load, should not be a problem if water changes is 2wice a week :). But we who keep aros love the majestic swimming posture of it. Why not maximize it?? 7 silvers long body swimming with one jardini, an agressive dragon. wow.

Blacks are always more expensive, because i believe most of them are wild caught and harder to come by.

For some reason no one has mentioned that a 125 will really not be suitable for the life of your Black or Silver Arowana. Eventually your fish will outgrow the width of your tank by quite a bit and will be increasingly cramped and more prone to jumping and injuring/killing itself.

I would plan on an upgrade in the future. Probably in the next 2 years at some point. Preferrably a 8x2x2 or larger for a Silver. Though many people get away with a 6x2x2 just fine. point is, a tank thats 18" wide for a fish that will grow over 24" long is not permanent. :)

um... are you saying that he could have 7 Silver arowanas and a Jardini in his 125? Or did you not read his entire post?
