when putting new fish or sick fish in a quarantine tank, how do you deal with ammonia?

do people used ammolock or a power filter with a ammonia filtering pad or just frequent water changes?

thanks for the help.

I keep a tank that I use mainly for culturing live bacteria. I use sponge filters that I can transfer to the Q tank. I also keep some messy fish I can move around in there if need be. These two oscars make a nice amount of bacteria for the sponges and keeps me from having to put the sponges in my show aquariums.

I realize not everybody has a spare tank to do so with but another route would be to keep a bottle of sea chems stability and prime on hand. Or keeping a sponge going in their main aquarium and transferring it to the Q tank. I hope this made sense im in a bit of a hurry.

when u put a cycled sponge in a tank that was used for meds, do you reuse the sponge afterwards or throw it away?

thanks for the reply.

You could re use it I don't see why not Just wring it out really good. Or the sponge on the right came with replacement sponges you could always pop on a new one but you would be starting over with the bacteria culture. Its up to you. I dont see it absorbing enough meds to affect a larger tank. The only thing I might worry about is if there was any remains of the disease you are treating in the sponge still.. But im OCD about that.

you can reuse them. If the treated fish is well enough to go back in the display tank, there should be nothing contagious left in the tank anyway.

I keep spare sponge filters in my canister filters so that when I set up a new tank, I can just remove one and replace it with a new one for future use.
