Questions about snakeheads

Hi I never had a snakehead and was wondering which ones where the smaller species and if anyone of them would be OK in 180 gal 6x2x2. Also i thought they were illegal and if not can you just get them at the LFS. And what tank mates are OK with snakeheads. Thxs
