I got a few questions about Ternetzi...

1) What is the differences between a Ternetzi and a Caribe ? Does Caribe have golden coloration on the belly?

2) Is Ternetzi rarer than S.Rhombus and S.Compressi?

3) How much would you expect to pay for a 4" Ternetzi?

4) Do you think this trade is worth it? Trading two 4" S.Rhom for a 4" Ternetzi?

:D

1) Ternetzi is a variant of P. nattereri ( i beleive it's from peru) not P. cariba. P cariba has no yellow colouration at all.

2) Rarer than S. Rhombeus (atleast from what i've seen) but less rare than S Compressus.

3) i've never seen one for sale in canada. On aquascape they go for $200 for a 6-7" one.

4) Depends completely on whether you prefer piranhas you can shoal (ternetzi) or 2 solo piranhas. In value it's probably not the best trade....

that's not a ternetzi, that's a Serrasalmus Maculatus.

Ternetzi is from Argentina, according some pictures on opefe.com, some p. nattereri from Bolivia also look like ternetzi.

Ternetzi is very hard to find now due to export regulation in SA, may still find some here or there but usually are around adult size. I have only seen 3 baby ones for sale about 2 years ago.

Are maculatus and spilopleura piranhas are hard to distinguish. In ^ photo, I do not see "black tips" on the ventral fin.

well don't think too badly at the mac, most mac keepers claims that mac has great personality so you might still have a twisted happy ending.
next time just post pictures here for verification first if you are not certain about the fish.

I think you still got a hell of a deal. Terns are just a variation of the common Red Belly, as it is stated now. Usually (if not all cases?) they are wild. They also grow at the same speed as a Red, which is quite quick.

You have a very nice Mac (or perhaps Spilo). I think you did very well. You can always get more baby rhoms, but the problem is they grow at the slow speed of 1" a year. You must likely have a fish that is much older than a tern would be at that size.
