So I attempted to construct my own overflow using the instructions here:
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=219465

It was fairly simple, but I do have a few questions.

First, I have a 75 Gallon tank, and I used 1" PVC, I also used the cut measurements as described in the instructions since a 75 and 55 have similar dimensions.

So here are my questions:

1) While I tried to cut the two "A" pipes the exact same length, one was about 1/2 inch longer. I know the outside pipe is not supposed to be longer than the inside, so I put the longer pipe on the inside. Is it OK to have the outside pipe about 1/2" shorter? To the eye is almost unnoticeable, but layed flat you can tell they are different

2) How can I secure the pipe to the tank. It is pretty well balanced, but I would like a way to make sure. I thought I could silicone it, but that would make maintainence difficult. Also, the pipe doesn't do all the way to the bottom of the tank, is that OK?

3) Is there any thing I can put over the intake pipe to prevent animals from getting in the pipe? I looked at Home Depot but didn't see anything. I would actually like something with a little slope to it, since I am going to have Turtles, and I don't want them to climb on top of the pipe and get stuck, or block the flow

4) Instead of the check valve, couldn't you just suck the air out of the back stand pipe with your mouth? Why wouldn't that work?

Also you could cut slits into the top of the overflow pipe it will prevent you turtles in the event that they climbed on top of it it would still allow suction. Also can you not just cut off the 1/2 inch. And to secure it to the tank I used a suction cup bracket.

Wow, I posted this a while ago, but it seems to have gotten bumped. Just so you all know, I have everything up and running. To keep livestock out of the overflow I bought a few PVC strainers from thatpetplace.
