I just bought a leopard bush fish at less than 1". He is by himself in a 10 gallon growout tank.

I'm thinking about ordering a 1-2" indo dat to grow out with him, but I've never kept datnoids, before(or even seen one actually).

Future tank mates would be 2 polypterus,(12" endi/ 10" senagalus)another leopard bush fish 5", and an african clawed frog 5".

Right now they are in a heavily planted 40 gallon breeder, with tons of hiding places. I've been thinking about dats for a while now, but I was going to wait until I got a bigger tank, until I saw that dats have a slow growth rate. Now I'm thinking I better start growing them now if they are ever going to catch up to my polys.

Is this a good idea?
Should I get more than one?
How long to get them to 4" mark?
Is that big enough to hang with my other fish?
Is an indo the right dat for my setup?

I would start with one dat. I don't know what leopard bush fish or clawed frog is so I couldn't tell u if it would be safe. It should do fine in that 40 gal until it gets a little bigger. It shouldn't take too long to reach 4", it's all going to vary depending on what it's fed and water quality.

I've noticed Dats tend to do well in small groups of 2-4 but honestly it doesn't matter. They should be fine to live in the 40 for a while depending on how big they are when you buy them. It would probably take 4-6 months for them to hit the 4" mark if you buy one that is 2" and you feed it often and perform 50% water changes weekly. An Indo would probably be the best species for you to buy. As for the clawed frog I've heard they can be very aggressive toward fish but considering I've never owned one I'll let someone else tell you if it's safe or not.
