If anyone has suggestions or insight to methods of moving a 120g tropical tank please let me know.

My main question... Do I need to save any of te water? Bacteria does not live in water but in the media and substrate, so part of me doesn't think I need to try and transport any of the water from the tank... Please let me know. Thanks!!

If you put some tank water in a bucket then you can run an airator pump with the media in the bucket to keep BB alive.not sure how long it lasts without filter running

It depends how far you are moving it. If I'm moving a tank far, the tank is likely to completely dry during the trip. If the tank and filters dry out completely, I think you should completely sanatize and clean them so you don't flush dried crap into the tank when you re-fill and re-start it.

In that case, if you don't have another tank to run the media in while you clean/sanatize everything, your bb in your media will likely die and rot in the time it takes to clean/sanatize your filters and tank unless you feed it with ammonia and keep it aerated. In this case, I usually just start all over with new bio media and do a fishless cycle.

So really, we need more info as to what type of move you are talking about. Are you talking about a 30 minute drive to the other side of town? Are you talking aboutmoving a tank from one room to the other? Are you talking about a tank you're picking up that's 5 hours away? Different situations call for different approaches.

Awesome post, thank you! I am moving the tank a total of 12 miles to my new house. It shouldn't take longer than 15-20 minutes to get there.

I think keeping the media submerged in a bucket with the fish and an aerator would suffice then, do you?

Sounds like a good plan. I'd soak a rag/towel in aquarium water and stuff it in the filter and then close the filter to keep it wet as well for the trip.

If possible, I'd leave a very small amount of water in the tank so the substrate doesn't dry out. You can also syran wrap the top or leave the lids on to keep everything moist so the tank doesn't dry out.
