hi all, i want to do a diy led light for a standard 29 gallon tank,
the led strips that i have purchased have 4 x 48 leds (48cm),
they are for vehicles so for use of 12v and thats all i know about them.
here is a link to a very similar product: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/48CM...Accessories&hash=item41456df4ec#ht_2799wt_939

being a amateur at this stuff i hooked them up to a little 5v power supply and it worked... temporarily, i think that i blew out the transformer, other than that the lights looked great.

ok, so my question is can i use a 12v power supply for laptops/monitors/other electronic devices
or
how can i wire it up to a 5v usb adapter and usb plug or will that not work?

thanks in advance :)

is this tread in the right spot? if not can the mods move it? thank again

Don't know much about electrical, but I do know that power supply has to be rated for the current draw of the LEDs. Those LEDs don't give you much info...

thank guys,
i was able to hook up 4 to a 12v 3000ma adapter friday and it worked nicely on my 29G.
i also had one strip left so i made another for my 10G using one of those 12v plug adapters for home use, took it apart and re-soldered some wires, i also made a little custom box for it, its got some decent lighting to it but on the dimmer side.

seems interesting and I'd be interested in pics if possible....to see it. I can't afford the Marineland LEDs for all my tanks....
