I have 155 gallon aquarium I haven't used in quite a while. I'm about to start looking at setting it up again. In the interest of space and convenience I'd like to do something unique. The plan is to pump the water out of the tank to the bottom of a 55galon drum filled with washed pea gravel from which it travels back into the tank again. I would only have about a foot of head. I plan to get local fish from the creek and/or marsh.

How does this sound? I can make the water move with the right size pump. What am I not thinking of?

I've done some reading of the instructions here on this site. I'm sure I could read more on this subject. But I'd like opinions.

Thanks!;)

Plan will work fine, but sounds like its going to be a pain in the arse to get to the pump for maintenaces and such.

The plan was to put the pump in the tank and push from there. Still a problem? I'll put a coarse filter at the pump.

I'll adjust my plan as I get info from people who are more knowledgeable than me. Which is just about everybody.

I'm not concerned about the 55gal drum. But I am very concerned about what if I have to clean that gravel.

Oh, I see. So, your plan is to seal the drum. Make it simpler by having the top of the drum slightly above the top of the tank, and let gravity empty the water back into the tank. This way the drum doesn't need to be sealed.....lesser chance of flooding. Also, with this set-up, you'll need a pre-filter on the pump, which means poor mechanical filtration, if this is your only filter

Gravity feed back to the tank is what I was thinking. I'll just raise the 55gal drum until the water spills back into the tank, basically.

External pump? So, it sucks the water from the tank then pushes it to the bottom of the drum? I'm definitely going to have to come up with a descent inline pre filter. I hadn't thought of that. I'll get one twice as big as I need so I don't have to mess with it as often.
