Hello MFK,

I've been breeding fishes for years now, and I'm just starting to venture out into breeding other freshwater creatures like invertebrates.

I'm trying to breed a pair of procambarus clarkii "red swamp crayfish" (Caught from the river)
Just trying to get a taste of breeding crayfish before I pick up a pair of Electric Blue Crayfishes and Pure White Crayfishes.

What triggers breeding in crayfishes?

Does Red Swamp Crayfishes, Electric Blue Crayfishes, Pure White Crayfishes, ect... have different ways to triggering breeding?

Has anyone ever successfully bred crayfish with no aquarium lights?
or does lighting play a big role in breeding crayfishes.?

Does substrate make a difference in breeding? Meaning, that they spawn better with substrate or not?
If so, Should I use sand or gravel substrate?

What is the best breeding m/f ratio? 1m/2f? Or a pair will do just fine?

I will be feeding them NLS and fish flakes. Maybe Occasional mollies. Maybe 1 molly a week. Any reccomendations on foods that can help getting them into spawning conditions? Or will those be just fine?

I will have more questions soon.

And yes, I have done tons or research on google but their are some sites that won't give me access thus not being about to answer some questions.

Got answers for my questions?
Please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

thats a good question(s)
all i can tell you is that within 15 minutes of getting mine home from the store they were doing it. And they still do at least once a day (had them about 3 weeks now) with no signs of her carrying eggs.

Also my LFS guy told me that when keeping them if they just keep fighting to chase the male around the tank to tire him out and hell just go and try to breed instead of beat on her.

Thanks for the input.
But chase him around? That sound pretty harsh, yet smart.
Hopefully I won't have to do that though. :D

Do you have lights on your tank w/ your cray in it?

Crayfish will just about breed anywhere.

Hm, Idk what i'm doing wrong then. I watch them breed in the LFS but never did at home. All they do is hide in the rockwork.
