This is something that's bugged me for a while now, I know we all think of SA fish as tropical but what about the fish from Argentina? Dorado and other fish from the Rio Parana would all be exposed to tempuratures in the 50s during the cooler months of the year. There are also Hoplias species native. Any of these fish living south of Buenos Aires would be exposed to even colder temperatures too. Just some food for though here, it be cool to find some realllll cold hearty SA fish IMO

Good thought. I just assumed most of these fish would migrate to water holding better temps.

Maybe dorados need a cooling period otherwise it makes me them more aggressive????!!!!

See what the others say. Good topic Hasircoglu Hasircoglu .

Thanks, I've heard they head to deep water in the winter months from some fisherman migration is another possibility too

Nice topic for discussion.

I would guess the collection points are mainly in warmer or tropical parts - the fishes collected are somewhat localized to warmer temperatures?

I'd like to think the warehouse or holding quarantine areas are in tropical areas as well. Cheaper to put them in one setup without the need for chiller for fishes caught in colder waters. Makes sense for them to do collect and export fishes that are suitable for a certain temperature tolerance.

Maybe someone who has been there to join those fish collecting process can share their knowledge. :)

I'm sure a chiller wouldn't be too necessary or at least not here where I live ;) They still obviously can live in tropical temps (evidence by all the mfkers with dorado) the real question is Do they NEED tropical temps year round, I'd love to hear from some fish collectors on the subject, fisherman too

That will be interesting to know too.

In fact I am eyeing some bowfins over here in warm Asia part of the world. Some importers are telling me that their stock are caught in Florida or warmer parts of USA - will be safe to keep them long term without chiller.

Still not 100 percent convinced at the moment though. LOL!

Yeah the bowfins are another prime example, I know for a fact that they can survive in near freezing water and under solid ice for a few months, but they also live in Florida, and the gulf cost of Texas where it's rare for water temperatures to drop below 65 even in the coolest winters.
P.S. If you want a bowfin I'd say go for it :) they're highly adaptable and should be fine as long as your talk stays in the 75-80 range
