Hello all. Ive got two projects in the mix.. One being Rays.. The other being a large 300 gallon tank with CA/SA Cichlids. One of the fish im going to be looking for is a Flowerhorn for this tank. (as well as a Red Texas).

Anyhow... On to the question.

I see so many different names for specific flowerhorns. Is there a guide with Pics here on the forum that says what each specific flowerhorn is? (yes ive read the sticky, but still so much more info out there im a bit confused) Id like to be able to determine what specific flowerhorn Id like to own in this set up. How about what determines grade or quality?

Any info anyone has they could share would be great.

Same goes with the Red Texas. Ive seen some varity I like with the red body and white pearl. But dont know much about them.

Thanks in advance!!!

Flowerhorns in general are best kept alone. Don't do well in communities. They are extremely aggressive. Kok has a lot to do with quality.

As far as the red texas, what you are describing is a fish that is extremely expensive and most likely would have to be imported. You can find nice ones for cheaper, they just won't have as deep of a red color and pearling may not be as good.

Would it make any difference if all the fish going into the tank were added roughly at the same time and as juveniles? The list of fish ive chosen is all pretty stout and aggressive.

So would a flowerhorn possibly work in this case or scenario? The tank is pretty good sized for juveniles.

While ive not done CA/SA fish in a tank of my own. I have been into the aquarium hobby for better then 35 years. Ive done salt water, reef, live planted tanks, African cichlids and more. I have had experience with SA/CA fish with one of my roommates for 2 years. That's been some time ago.

So I understand the kok makes difference in quality but where can a person find the info on names and what the different strains look like?

As far as the red texas. I'm not worried about cost or where it has to come from. Unless there is issues getting them here safely.

As far as a fh in a community tank its a bad idea. I have seen it work but I wouldn't try it. I have several fh and keep them all divided and none in my community tank. Sounds like your interest in a high quality fh so to put him in a community is taking a risk.

As far as quality goes there's more than just kok but it varies a bit from type to type. Kok, color, shape, pearls, fin shape/patterns, and tail. When selecting a fh you kind of have to decide which traits are important to you and find one with them. If you want a fish that has it all its going to cost $$$.

Types can be confusing. In some cases 3 different breeders will have an identical looking fish and each breeder will call it somthing different. You could go on forever with this so here are some common types, do a search for more info
Kamfa
Kamalau
Red dragon/ srd
Thai silk

I would agree with the fh in a community tank not being a good idea. This comes from experience as I have had two at various times and neither would tolerate tankmates

Thanks for the great info. I will do some research on them. I'm more interested in the community set up the just a single species. But figured id ask here about FH's specifically. Just happen to like the look of some of them.

Actually I'm more interested in red Texas. Or is there issues there as well that keep from having them in a community set up?

The red texas will probably be ok in a community, but that solely relies on the fish's personality. Can you post a pic of the type or quality of red texas you are looking for? I would at least be able to give you a ball park idea on how much it will cost...good ones are not cheap.

Thanks for the input. Considering how much ive invested on fish in the past lol. Some costing $500 for a single fish. I'm not to worried. But that would be great if you could give me a little idea of cost.

Here is a pic of one ive seen I really like.
