If I were to make a sump out of a 15 gallon tank (24.5 L x 12.5 W x 12.75 H) or possibly a standard 10 gallon tank what kind of pump would I need? It would be hooked up to a 55 gallon.

I'd suggest a larger sump. Plastic bins are cheap and work fine. While you don't need gallons and gallons of media, you do need some significant water volume in the sump to prevent it running dry, and to allow for overflow when the pump is off.

What size pump you need depends on what kind of current you want in the tank, and what kind of filtration you have in the sump. A wet-dry needs enough flow to keep the media wet. With submerged media, the flow rate doesn't matter much. Neither kind needs a raging 10X turnover or anything like that.

I suggest goping to TARGET and picking up a 30-60g plastic tub for under $10...........The perfect size, yes, because then the filter can be used on larger tanks as upgrades are made................

Thanks for the replys. Any particular tub to choose? I dont wanna get one that would be too weak and possible crack.

Any of the rubbermaid tubs or totes should be fine i am building a sump/trickle filter and just using a 32 gallon sterilite tote for mine since my gf stole my 36 gallon rubbermaid tote lol.

In order to buy the right water pump? You have to determine your head height, first. I would also use something larger than a 15g to make my DIY sump.

My first post for a long time on this forum. Quick question I am thinking of a building a sump for my 180g freshwater tank and wanted to know if there were any plans/designs/links I could use to assist me with this venture.
